Twitter is everywhere nowadays and if you have not caught on to the “Twitter-fever,” you may be wondering why it seems to be taking over the world!
To put it simply: Twitter is an information network made up of 140-character messages called ‘Tweets’. It’s an easy way to discover the latest news related to subjects that are relevant to you. In this day and age, being able to access instant information is growing more and more popular, and reading Tweets is a convenient way to discover new information.
Twitter allows you to access information that is interesting to you. Messages from accounts that you choose to follow will show up on your home page. For example, if you follow NPR, you can check out Tweets from NPR on your personal news feed. Twitter perfectly describes itself as a “newspaper whose headlines you will always find interesting.” By using Twitter, you’ll be able to catch up on news that’s interesting to you while it’s happening.
Ok – let’s say, after learning about Twitter, you have created your own account, followed other accounts, and occasionally read Tweets in your downtime, so what else can you do? Well, you can use your own Twitter handle to tweet interesting information! You can even contribute to popular topics that are trending on Twitter by using a ‘hashtag’. This brings up a really cool feature about Twitter: the hashtag. A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash (#) and is used to identify messages on a specific topic. When you search a particular hashtag, you can view Tweets that contain that hashtag. A tweet that contains a hashtag can look something like this: ‘How can people substitute drinks for food? #juicing.’
Furthermore Twitter displays the hashtags that are being used most frequently, or trending, among the Twitter community. For example, as I check Twitter right now, I can see that #PeterPanLive is trending. NBC just broadcasted Peter Pan Live this week, so Twitter users have a lot to say about the show. By exploring which hashtags are trending, you can catch a glimpse of what people are saying about those hot topics and even give your two cents on the matter. If you have something to say, state it with a #hashtag!
Now that you have some insight into the depths of Twitter, you may still be wondering what the big deal is. Well that, my friend, is for you to discover yourself. Twitter writes that you will find the most value in Twitter by reading Tweets and discovering new information whenever you check in on your Twitter. While you can read a multitude of articles about it, you will never completely understand the magic of Twitter until you experience it. So – what are you waiting for?!
